Cuil the new Google…… nah.. I don’t think so :P

I am sure that most of you in the information technology/ tech arena are aware of something called Cuil.

Cuil is the latest addition to the web search arena and is a brain child of a few ex-Googlers.

Being tagged as the Google killer, Cuil claims to have indexed web pages – “three times as many as Google and ten times as many as Microsoft.”

The other Key claims being:

  • It uses far fewer servers than the search leader, yet indexes a much larger chunk of the Web.
  • It produces more relevant search results, because the information returned is based on the way ideas are organised and not their populatiry.
  • And Last but surely not the least being that, “It doesn’t collect information on its users’ search histories or IP addresses.”  So, bbye privacy concerns.

My feedback about search on Cuil:

  • AJAX based suggestions are cool. However, the time they take to come up is as much as an Indian Govt. website :P
  • Sleek design and page looks like and application page rather than a search results page.
  • The category results are not really helpful. E.g: I searched for ‘Mobile Phones’ and the first result I got on the page was Nokia. However, the category results showed Sony Ericsson, Samsung and everything else. Except, Nokia.
  • No image or video results :(
  • Finally, I really don’t think the black coloured home page is appealing to the eye.

I think the UI sucks. Too much information and page looks very cluttered. Relevance: well, I’m eager to know how many of those mammoth number of results on every keyword are actually related. First page results seem ok, but Google’s still far ahead. I’d be a little bothered if I were Google Search though.

Ideally, I don’t it matters the number of results you have. I search for mobile phones and I am not going to care if they are showing results out of 5 billion or just 200 pages if the results they show are relevant. I mean, how many times do you go beyond the 4/5 or even the 10th page for that matter.

I like the way the search results are organized as chunks rather than a list. I get to see more info. I wonder where they’d place the ads, if any.

But relevance is a major issue.
